英語でドラマとかを見ていて、
観客が笑っているのに
「え？今なんで笑ったの？」
と言う経験をしたことがある人はいるだろうか。。。
心配しなくてもいいと思う。
きっと英語学習者ならばみんな経験があるから。
ジョークネタなら飽きないでリーディングできる。
英語でジョーク：前回に引き続き「Absent-minded: うっかり」に関するジョーク
(1) うっかりの発明家
The absent-minded inventor perfected a parachute device.
[inventor: 発明家] [perfect: 完成させる] [device: 装置]
He was taken up in a balloon to make a test of the apparatus.
[be taken up: 上げられる] [apparatus: 装置]
Arrived at a height of a thousand feet, he climbed over the edge of the basket, and dropped out.
[height: 高さ] [climb: 登る] [basket: かご] [drop out: 落ちる]
He had fallen two hundred yards when he remarked to himself, in a tone of deep regret:
[remark to: に言う] [in a tone of: の口調で] [regret: 後悔]
“Dear me! I’ve gone and forgotten my umbrella.”
「なんてことだ傘を忘れてしまった！」
オチ：パラシュート装置とは傘だった？
(2)うっかりの教授
The professor, who was famous for the wool-gathering of his wits, returned home, and had his ring at the door answered by a new maid. （教授が家にたどり着き、メイドにドアを開けてもらう）
[wool-gathering: 空想にふける] [wits: 機知] [had his ring at the door answered: 来客の対応をしてもらう]
The girl looked at him inquiringly: （the girlとはメイドのこと）
[inquiringly: 知りたそうに]
“Um—ah—is Professor Johnson at home?” he asked, naming himself.
“No, sir,” the maid replied, “but he is expected any moment now.”
[reply: 応える] [be expected: もうすぐ帰ってくる]
The professor turned away, the girl closed the door.
[turn away: 向きを変える]
Then the poor man sat down on the steps to wait for himself.
[steps: 階段]
オチ：自分の家に帰ってきた教授が、新しいメイドに認識されずに外で待たされた。
終わりに
今回は二つ紹介してみたけど、
正直言ってオチがいまいちわかりずらかった。
もしかしたらオチが両方とも違っているのかもしれないが、
もしも間違っていたら訂正していきたい。
