ambiguous（曖昧な）
Mnemonic device:
Think of “ambi-” (both) → something that can be taken both ways is ambiguous.
Association:
「アンビバレンス（両価的）」に似てる → 両方に取れる → 曖昧。
Contextual usage:
Her ambiguous smile left me wondering if she liked the surprise or hated it.
bedraggled（ずぶ濡れでみすぼらしい）
Mnemonic device:
Imagine someone being dragged through mud → bedraggled.
Association:
「引きずられてドロドロ」→ bedraggled
Contextual usage:
The bedraggled kitten looked like it had swum across a swamp.
catastrophically（壊滅的に）
Mnemonic device:
Catastrophe = disaster → catastrophically = disastrously.
Association:
「カタストロフィ映画」→ 壊滅的な状況
Contextual usage:
The tower collapsed catastrophically after the earthquake.
consequently（その結果として）
Mnemonic device:
Consequence → result → consequently = as a result.
Association:
「コンセクエンス（結果）」→ consequently
Contextual usage:
He didn’t study; consequently, he failed the test.
dogmatic（独断的な）
Mnemonic device:
Think of a stubborn dog that insists its way is the only way.
Association:
「ドグマ（教義）」→ こうあるべき！ → dogmatic
Contextual usage:
Her dogmatic opinions left no room for discussion.
equivocal（曖昧な）
Mnemonic device:
Equi- (equal) + vocal (voice) → equal voices = both sides → ambiguous.
Association:
「両方の声が同じ → 曖昧」→ equivocal
Contextual usage:
His equivocal response frustrated everyone who wanted a clear answer.
flimsy（薄っぺらな、もろい）
Mnemonic device:
Imagine a film (フィルム) — thin and fragile → flimsy.
Association:
「フィルムみたいに薄い → flimsy」
Contextual usage:
The chair was so flimsy it broke as soon as I sat on it.
initially（最初は）
Mnemonic device:
Initial = first → initially = at first.
Association:
「イニシャル（名前の頭文字）」は最初 → initially
Contextual usage:
Initially, I didn’t like the song, but it grew on me.
insular（閉鎖的な、島国的な）
Mnemonic device:
Insula = island → closed off like an island.
Association:
「島のように外から閉ざされた → insular」
Contextual usage:
His insular thinking prevented him from considering new ideas.
intimidated（怯えた）
Mnemonic device:
Timid means shy → intimidated = made timid by something.
Association:
「威圧されて timid（臆病）になる → intimidated」
Contextual usage:
The big dog intimidated the little puppy.
languishing（低迷している、弱っている）
Mnemonic device:
Languid = tired → languishing = slowly declining.
Association:
「ぐったりして弱る → languishing」

obscure（不明瞭な、無名の）
Mnemonic device:
Ob- (opposite) + secure (確かな) → not clear or certain.
Association:
「よくわからない → obscure」

obsequious（へつらう）
Mnemonic device:
Ob- (toward) + sequence (順番に従う) → always following → overly obedient.
Association:
「ペコペコして順番に従う → obsequious」
Contextual usage:

ultimately（結局は）
Mnemonic device:
Ultimate = final → ultimately = in the end.
Association:
「最終的に → ultimately」
Contextual usage:
Ultimately, it was his hard work that led to success.
squeamish（神経質な、気弱な）
Mnemonic device:
Squea- sounds like “squeal” → people squeal when disgusted.
Association:
「グロいのが苦手で悲鳴 → squeamish」

She’s too squeamish to watch horror movies.
