The day began with a drab sky, clouds hanging low like they too had given up hope. I took the devious path through the forest, not to escape anything—but simply to avoid people. There’s something eerie about the way trees whisper when the wind has no business blowing. A haughty crow stared down at me from its perch, as if judging my entire life.
In town, I walked past a morbid art gallery filled with paintings of crying vegetables and skeletons brushing their teeth. I used to work a menial job scrubbing invisible floors in that very gallery. It left me feeling inert, like I was made of rubber and apathy.
By noon, I felt lethargic, barely able to lift my arms to drink the tepid tea I got from a vendor who looked equally bored. A group of obnoxious tourists blasted music from speakers shaped like pineapples. The mood of the street was subdued, but their energy cut through it like a knife.
I overheard a couple arguing about a trivial matter—whose turn it was to carry the imaginary dog. Their voices were so vulgar that passing birds filed a noise complaint.
