ナウシカの世界観は壮大である。
環境、歴史、神話、超常現象、交渉、戦争、人間関係、
などなどテーマはいろいろとある。
そんなナウシカを英語で読むと。。。
世界観が壮大なだけあって、学べるトピックもさまざまだ。
そんなナウシカを英語で読むとさまざまな表現が
まんがの中で効果的に記憶に残しながら学ぶことができる。
今回取り上げるのは
クロトワとクシャナだ。
クロトワはもともとクシャナ姫を罠にはめようとしていたが
主役クラスに頭の切れるクシャナを騙せるわけはなく、
クロトワはあっさりとクシャナの兄たちを裏切り
クシャナに交渉する。
そんな場面から交渉に使えそうな英語表現を学んでみよう。
ナウシカ３巻：クロトワの寝返り
「この作戦は私を抹殺するために兄たちがしくんだ罠だ。お前の任務は秘石を手に入れ持ち帰ることであろう。」（クシャナ）
「This whole operation has been a trap to get rid of me, planned by my older brothers. And I suppose your mission is to get that stone and take it back to Torumekia.」
get rid of: ～を取り除く
「実のことを言いますとね、命令に腹を立てて殿下はペジテから王都へもどると思ってたんでさあ。あっちじゃそれを期待してたんで。」（クロトワ）
「To tell the truth, I figured the orders to go south would make you so angry, you’d go straight to the capital from Pejitei. That’s what they wanted, back home.」
to tell the truth: 実を言うと
「軍令無視、謀反の意思あり、殿下は殺されるはずだったんでさ。ところが戦隊がボロボロになってもひたすら忠実に命令を守ってる。なぜでしょうね。」（クロトワ）
「Defying orders, plotting rebellion. Your highness was supposed to be executed, but instead you’ve faithfully followed orders to the letter, even with your army smashed. Why, I wondered.」
defy: 逆らう
plot: 企てる
rebellion: 反逆
to the letter: 文字通りに
「おれは平民出の貧乏軍人にすぎねえ。せいぜい生きながらえて生きながらえて年金暮らしが関の山だ。」（クロトワ）
「I’m just a poor soldier, born of common stock. The best I can hope for is to survive my days and collect my pension.」
common stock: 普通株
pension: 年金
「お偉方の秘密を知った平民が生き延びたためしはねえんで、任務を達成してもしなくても、うまくいって銃殺か毒殺でさあ、要するに後がねえんだ。」（クロトワ）
「I’ve yet to hear of a commoner who got away with learning the secrets of royalty. Whether I accomplished my mission or not, I knew it would be the end of me. I’d be lucky getting off with just being shot or poisoned.」
commoner: 平民
get away with: 逃げ切る
「殿下、ひとつ俺を使ってみませんか？ここんとこへきて打つ手がなくて実は困ってたんでさあ。忠実で血筋もよいが融通の利かねえ貴族出の士官よりずっと使い出があると思うんですがね。」（クロトワ）
「Your highness, why don’t you try using Kurotowa for yourself? Frankly I’ve just about played out all my cards in this game. I’m at my wit’s end. I think you’ll find me a lot more useful than those loyal, blue-blooded aristocrat officers of yours who don’t know how to roll with the punches.」
play out all one’s card: 手を使い切る
at one’s wit’s end: 万策尽きて
blue-blooded: 貴族出身の
aristocrat: 貴族階級の人
roll with the punches: 批判をかわす、困難を乗り切る
終わりに
今回はクシャナとクシャナの兄たちの陰謀から寝返るクロトワの
場面を使って英語を学んでみた。
クロトワに関して言えば、
最初はいやなキャラクターだったがストーリーが進むについれて
憎めないキャラになってくるから不思議だ。
