今日はシャーロックホームズの本の中のダイアローグを行ってみよう。
会話調だと記憶にも残りやすく、さらにシャーロックホームズも楽しむことができる。
⑬老婆が入ってくるところから
呼び鈴がなり、何者かは廊下をのろのろと歩いてきて、弱々しく部屋の扉を叩いた。
呼びかけると、我々が想像していた凶悪犯ではなく、しわくちゃの老婆がよたよたと入ってきた。老婆は夕刊を取りだし、例の広告を指し示した。
The old crone: “It’s this as has brought me, good gentlemen? A gold wedding ring in the Brixton Road. It belongs to my girl Sally, as was married only this time twelvemonth, which her husband is steward aboard a Union boat, and what he’d say if he come ‘ome and found her without her ring is more than I can think, he being short enough at the best of times, but more especially when he has the drink. If it pleases you, she went to the circus last night along with——”
The old crone:「これ、これでわたしゃ来たんですがね、親切なお兄さん方。ブリクストン通りの金の結婚指輪。こりゃわたしの娘、サリィのもので。娘は、結婚してちょうど一年で、夫はユニオン汽船の給仕をしとっての、家に帰ってきて、娘が指輪をしとらんことに気がついたら、何を言うかわかったもんじゃなし、いくらあれでも気が短いもんでね、酒を呑んどりゃもう特に。聞いて下され、娘は昨晩、あのサーカスに行っておりましてのぅ――」
Watson: “Is that her ring?”
Watson:「指輪は、これですかな？」
The old crone: “The Lord be thanked! Sally will be a glad woman this night: That’s the ring.”
The old crone:「ありがたや、ありがたや。サリィも今夜は機嫌ようなろうて。この指輪で。」
Watson: “And what may your address be?”
Watson:「で、あなたのご住所は？」
The old crone: “13, Duncan Street, Houndsditch. A weary way from here.”
The old crone「ハウンズディッチ、ダンカン街一三。ほんにくたびれたわい。」
Holmes: “The Brixton Road does not lie between any circus and Houndsditch,”
Holmes:「ハウンズディッチからどこのサーカスへ行っても、ブリクストン通りは通らない。」
The old crone: “The gentleman asked me for my address. Sally lives in lodgings at 3, Mayfield Place, Peckham.”
The old crone:「このお兄さんが聞いたのはわたし［＃「わたし」に傍点］の住所じゃサリィの方はペッカム、メイフィールド・プレイス三の下宿におります。」
Holmes: “And your name is——?”
Holmes:「あなたのお名前は――？」
The old crone: “My name is Sawyer—hers is Dennis, which Tom Dennis married her—and a smart, clean lad, too, as long as he’s at sea, and no steward in the company more thought of; but when on shore, what with the women and what with liquor shops——”
The old crone:「わたしゃソーヤと――娘はデニス、トム・デニムと結婚したもんで――かしこうて、ちゃんとした若者での、もっとも、それも海にいる間だけのことで、会社での評判はよろしいのに、陸《おか》に上がれば、女やら酒屋やらで――」
Watson: “Here is your ring, Mrs. Sawyer. It clearly belongs to your daughter, and I am glad to be able to restore it to the rightful owner.”
Watson:「お探しの指輪です、ソーヤさん。正真正銘、娘さんのものですね。元の持ち主に返せて、私も嬉しいですよ。」
With many mumbled blessings and protestations of gratitude the old crone packed it away in her pocket, and shuffled off down the stairs.
老婆はもごもごと祝福と感謝の言葉を何度もつぶやきながら、指輪を懐にしまい入れ、階段をよたよたと降りていった。
